In the years of the Warring States, King Xuan of Qi enjoyed listening to music played by yu, especially that played by a lot of people in an ensemble. So he started an orchestra composed of about several hundreds of people. Whoever could be selected into the orchestra was given special preferential treatment.

At that time, there was a loafer named Nan Guo. As he heard that King Xuan of Qi had this kind of special habit, he intended to sneak into the orchestra very much. Therefore, he boasted to King Xuan of Qi that he was an outstanding musician and thus gained the favor of King Xuan of Qi, who involved Guo as one of the players in the orchestra.

In fact, Sir Nan Guo couldn't play the yu at all. Whenever the orchestra played music for King Xuan of Qi, he just pantomimed in the orchestra and imitated others by swinging his head, as if he was "playing" the yu.
